How to Apply in China
Chinese universities usually accept admissions in two semesters each year. The first semester is in March and ends in September of the following year. The second semester starts in September and ends in January of the following year. The September semester has more courses and scholarship opportunities than the March semester.
There are generally two ways to apply for admission. One is directly on the university’s online portal or through e-mail. Another is CUCAS (University and College Admission System of China).
The CUCAS platform essentially acts as an intermediary between students and universities. It not only accepts applications but also helps you make the right decision in choosing a course and institution. Uploading the required application documents, paying the application fee, checking the current status of your application, and obtaining Form JW 202 can all be done through this portal.
Documents required for application
- Higher secondary education, diploma or equivalent examination certificates and mark sheets (for graduates);
- Degree certificate and certificate (Master’s or PhD);
- Copy of valid passport;
- Passport size photo;
- English language proficiency certificate (IELTS Academic or TOEFL IBT score);
- Letter of recommendation (Master’s or PhD);
- A statement of guarantee (a statement signed by the student’s parents or guardians promising to abide by student rules and regulations in China and at the university).
- A research proposal (for doctoral programs).
- Evidence of payment of the admission fee. The fee usually ranges from $80 to $150, depending on the institution.
Application Requirements in China
- For admission to a graduate school, you will need a diploma, high school diploma, or equivalent
- For a master’s degree, you will need at least a bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, you can also apply for a doctoral program.
- For an MBA degree, you will need at least two years of professional experience in addition to your degree. You may need GMAT or GRE scores as additional documentation. Some institutions may conduct entrance exams and online interviews.

Scholarships in China
Various scholarships in China make it easier for international students to study and live. The most popular of them is the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS), which is managed by the Chinese Ministry of Education. His project covers all kinds of programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. This includes tuition fees of 30,000 yuan per year, accommodation, living expenses, and health insurance.
In addition, many Chinese universities award scholarships on their own. For example, Tsinghua University scholarships are 3,000 yuan per month including full tuition fees. Peking University scholarships are 2,000 yuan per month including full tuition fees.
Fudan University International Student Scholarship includes full tuition fees plus a monthly stipend of 2,500 yuan. Zhejiang University offers a monthly scholarship of 2,200 yuan including full tuition fees.
Part-time job in China
In addition to their studies, students are allowed to work up to 4 hours per day and up to 24 hours per week. The hourly wage for these part-time jobs averages 10-50 yuan. This salary works out to 1,000-5,000. However, to work this way, students need a valid passport and visa, as well as a work permit from their university.
How to apply for a student visa
- For long-term study programs such as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, you will need to apply for a China X-1 visa. This visa allows you to stay in China for more than 6 months or 180 days.
- This visa should be applied for at least one month before your planned entry date into China. However, it doesn’t make sense to start the application process three months in advance.
With this visa, your entry time from your country to China is a maximum of three months (taking into account working days).
- All X-1 visa applications must be made online. To do this, open an account on the China Visa Center website. Then fill in the required information in the online application.
- When it says “You must submit your passport” at the end, print out the first and last pages of the application. The last page must be hand-signed and dated by the applicant. You will need to go to the China Visa Application Centre in your country to submit all your application documents. Before you arrive, it is important to check if your China Visa Portal account shows the “Passport Needed” status.
